Microwave Mondays #24 Sample: Lee Michaels “Tell Me How Do You Feel” suite [Guest Judge: Cosmo Baker]

For this edition of Microwave Mondays we got one of our favorite DJs, Cosmo Baker, as the guest judge and sample selector.  If you’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing Cos spin, you know that dude commands the dance floor like a general, masterfully mixing a wide variety of genres to get the party poppin. Aside from obvious talent and experience, it’s his deep crates and seemingly boundless musical knowledge that have allowed this Brooklyn-based, Philly-raised DJ to put together energy-filled, diverse sets for over two decades.  In addition to knowing records, Baker can intelligently write about them – as evidenced by his recent “10 Favorite Sample Flips” on egotripland.com.

Cosmo has picked for us a funky 20-minute medley/suite by B-3 Hammond player and wailing vocalist, Lee Michaels, from Michaels’ 1969 self-titled live studio album on A&M.  With a bare bones setup – Michaels on the organ and Bartholomew Smith-Frost (“Frosty”) on the drums – the two musicians rock the fuck out on this “track”.

This is what Cos had to say about his selection:

“For this Microwave Mondays I decided to choose a record that was a relatively common one, but a record that hasn’t been flipped a jagillion times already. The first thing that I thought about was Lee Michaels “Tell Me How Do You Feel” suite – an over 15-minute sparse whiteboy blues jam-band workout that is just packed full of parts that are ripe for the picking. This is a record that I have a lot of love for and can listen to incessantly, and it’s a pretty common find. I’ve probably bought at least 20 copies cause I’ll find myself saying to friends “You know that eponymous Lee Michaels record… You DON’T? Well then here’s MY copy!”

Anyway, this record is dope and there are plenty of flippable parts to it, with organ, cool vocal stabs, and crazy drum breaks and sounds. I’ve always wanted to make something from it myself but I never got around to it… So let’s see what the Microwave Mondays competitors can come up with.”

Producers, you can download the Lee Michaels joint at the link below.  Please flip it and email your beats to microwavemondays@gmail.com by Tuesday, October 30th.  Be sure to review the showcase rules here before starting.  Cosmo will announce his top 3 beats a week after all the submissions are in.  Happy cookin’!

The producer of the first place beat for this showcase will have the choice of receiving a free download of either Reason Essentials or one of the Reason Refills (Reason Drum Kits, Reason Pianos, Reason Electric Bass), courtesy of Propellerhead.
